Despite its large area, over 1,349,129 square kilometres, the Northern Territory is sparsely populated. With a population of 217,559 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2007), it is the least populous division in the country.  The population of the Northern Territory is the youngest in Australia (median age 30.3 years) and is highly urbanised.  Indigenous Australian people make up 31% of the Northern Territory’s population, a significantly higher proportion of Indigenous people than in other states.
